We don’t blame you for putting amazing skin at the tip-top of your bucket list. Whether in the name of family gatherings, an exciting vacation or an infinite number of holiday parties, ‘tis the season to show off glowing winter skin. Unfortunately, this is also the season of a few annoying skin stressors (the previously mentioned celebrations, a packed shopping schedule and crazy cold weather) that make it extra challenging to keep skin in great shape. Thus enters Avon skin care.
We asked Alina Gonzalez, Avon’s executive director of global innovation, and Dr. Julia Tzu, medical director and founder of Wall Street Dermatology in New York City, to clue us in on their tips for keeping skin merry, bright and beautiful.
1. DO double down on Avon skin care moisturizer.
The combination of cold outside temperatures and hot air inside can lead to dry and irritated skin, so frequent use of moisturizers and lotions in cold weather is a must. “Pay special attention to delicate areas, such as your neck and under your eyes,” says Dr. Tzu. Gonzalez, who suggests changing up your skin care formula during winter. “If you use a lightweight lotion in the summer, switch to a more hydrating version or heavier cream as the seasons change.”
2. DON’T put away your sunscreen.
“In the winter months, UV rays can be just as damaging,” says Gonzalez. Whether you’re skiing or surfing, invest in Anew Clinical Skinvincible Multi-Shield Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 50, a moisturizer and sun protector in one.
3. DON’T take hot showers.
We know it’s tempting to retreat from a the antarctic climate into the comfort of a steaming shower. However, hot water dries out and irritates skin. It also make naturally shiny hair lackluster. For the sake of beauty, learn to love a lukewarm rinse.
4. DO prioritize beauty sleep.
Missing out on a good night’s rest deprives skin of its usual time to regenerate. Dr. Tzu recommends squeezing in naps and doing your best to stay on a routine sleep cycle despite a busy schedule. Plus, no matter what time you hit the pillow, always wash your face first. “Makeup can clog pores and prevent your skin from breathing,” says Gonzalez. If all else fails, keep cleansing wipes on hand. This Avon skin care product is only $3.99.
5. DON’T live on sweets, cakes and candies.
Foods high in sugar and dairy are considered “pro-inflammatory” and can cause acne flare-ups, which is certainly not the Christmas surprise you’re looking for. “Balance your diet with foods rich in fiber, like vegetables, fruits, and whole grains,” says Dr. Tzu.
6. DON’T become BFFs with the bartender.
Keeping alcohol consumption to a minimum will prevent sallow-looking or sagging skin. Instead, drink tons of water to keep yourself hydrated from the inside out. If you must partake, drink at least one glass of H2O for every glass of bubbly.
7. DO invest in a hydrating mask.
If you need a refresher after that late flight back home, a hydrating mask is your go-to treatment for replenishing moisture and soothing tired skin. Gonzalez recommends Avon’s ANEW Clinical Overnight Hydration Mask, a time-saving treatment that absorbs instantly and works its magic while you sleep.
8. DO pamper yourself.
Since holiday stress can increase your of chances of a breakout, Dr. Tzu suggests gifting yourself a massage, a little aromatherapy or a relaxing bath to keep your mind calm and your skin clear. Remember, those are doctor’s orders.
